This Twitter character counter counts your post the same way X does when you press Post: 280 characters on a free account. Paste your text above and the count updates as you type.
X measures a post in characters rather than words or bytes, and most letters, digits and punctuation each count as one. Its own counter weights two things differently from a plain count: a link always costs 23 characters however long the URL is, because X routes every link through its own shortener, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters cost two. This tool counts plainly and does not reproduce that weighting, so on a post near the limit that carries links or CJK text, read the number as a guide rather than a verdict.
X Premium raises the ceiling to 25,000 characters. A post past 280 is still collapsed in the timeline behind a Show more link, so the opening line does the work whatever your tier. Replies in a thread each get their own 280, which is why a long argument on X is usually several posts.

Do links count toward the 280 characters?
Yes, and always as 23 characters regardless of the real URL's length. X rewrites every link through its t.co shortener, so a very long URL costs the same as a short one.
Do emoji count as one character?
In this counter, yes. X can count a composite emoji — a skin-tone variant, a family, a flag — as more than one, because it is assembled from several underlying characters. Leave a few characters of room if your post ends near 280.
What happens if a post is over the limit?
X refuses to publish it and the Post button stays disabled. Nothing is truncated for you.
