The Threads character limit is 500 characters per post. Paste your text above to count it. Spaces, line breaks, emoji and @mentions all count, and links count as their full length rather than being shortened the way X shortens them.
500 characters is roughly 80 to 90 words, which makes Threads the tightest of the text-first networks after X's free tier. A post that runs over is usually better as a chain: replying to your own post keeps the thread together and each reply gets its own 500 characters.
The limit applies to the post text. Attached images and video have their own constraints, and alt text is counted separately.
Threads mirrors a lot of Instagram's behaviour and shares its account, but the limits are not the same — an Instagram caption takes 2,200 characters, more than four times what a Threads post takes. Cross-posting the same copy to both usually means writing to the Threads limit and letting Instagram carry the longer version.
Questions
What is the character limit on Threads?
500 characters per post, including spaces, emoji and mentions.
Can a Threads post be longer than 500 characters?
Not as one post. Replying to your own post continues the thread, and each reply gets its own 500 characters.
Do links count toward the Threads character limit?
Yes, at their full length. Threads does not shorten links the way X does, so a long URL can take a tenth of the post.
Is the Threads limit the same as Instagram's?
No. A Threads post takes 500 characters and an Instagram caption takes 2,200, even though the two share an account.
