This Instagram character counter measures your caption against the platform's limit of 2,200 characters. The more useful number is the smaller one: Instagram shows about the first 125 characters in the feed and hides the rest behind “… more”, so the opening sentence carries the caption.
Instagram counts characters, and spaces, line breaks, emoji and @mentions all count. Hashtags count too — up to 30 are allowed per post, and a block of them eats into the same 2,200. Putting tags in the first comment keeps the caption readable, and Instagram treats them the same way either place.
Line breaks are awkward here. The app strips trailing blank lines when a caption is saved, which is why carefully spaced captions collapse into one paragraph after posting. Writing the caption elsewhere and pasting it in survives more reliably than typing it in the app.
Other surfaces have their own limits: a bio holds 150 characters, a Reels caption uses the same 2,200 as a feed post, and alt text allows 100.
