This Instagram post preview shows your caption under the image the way the feed shows it, cut at about 125 characters with “… more”. Paste a caption into the editor and add up to ten images to see them as a carousel.
The first line does all the work. Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters and hides the rest, so a caption that spends two sentences setting up context is a caption most people read the setup of.
Hashtags are part of the caption's 2,200 characters whether they sit in the caption or in the first comment, and thirty are allowed per post. Trailing blank lines are trimmed when Instagram saves a caption, which is why carefully spaced captions collapse into one block after posting — writing the caption elsewhere and pasting it in survives more reliably than typing it in the app.
