Every tool in this article can put a post on Instagram at 9am on Thursday. That problem was solved years ago. The reason people leave Buffer is that it charges per channel, and the tier that lets a second person into the account charges double per channel.

The short answer, if you are in a hurry: Publer if you want the same thing cheaper, SocialPilot if you manage clients, Metricool if you want the reporting, Planable if a client signs off on everything, and PostPost.ai if nobody in your business is going to write the posts. The rest of this page is the arithmetic behind that.

Quick comparison

Tool From What it charges for Makes the content? Hours a week left with you
PostPost.ai $59/mo Brands. Seats and channels are free Plan, captions, branded images, carousels ~0.5 to 1
Publer $5/mo per account Social accounts Captions ~3.5 to 4
SocialPilot $20/mo Social accounts, 5 included Captions ~3.5 to 4
Metricool $25/mo Brands, 5 included Captions ~3.5 to 4
Planable $33/mo per workspace Workspaces. Seats free, analytics and inbox extra Captions ~3 to 3.5
Later $25/mo Social sets, 1 included Captions, 5 credits on entry ~3.5 to 4
Hootsuite $99/mo per user People Captions and images ~3 to 3.5
Buffer, for reference $6/mo per channel Channels. A second person doubles the rate Captions ~3.5 to 4

Monthly billing. Every price was read off the vendor’s own pricing page on 28 August 2026.

How we compared. Three things, in this order. What the bill actually comes to in three real shapes, including a team, rather than the headline entry price. What the tool produces on its own, because a caption button and a finished post are different products. And which of the two features people assume are included, analytics and a comments inbox, are actually one tier up or sold as an add-on.

Why people leave Buffer

Plan Price Channels Users Approvals
Free $0 3 1 No
Essentials $6 per channel / mo ($5 annual) as many as you pay for 1 No
Team $12 per channel / mo ($10 annual) as many as you pay for Unlimited Yes

Two mechanics do the damage.

The multiplication. Four channels on Essentials is $24 a month. Twelve channels is not a bigger plan, it is twelve times the line item.

The jump. Essentials allows exactly one user and there is no way to pay for a second. The moment a designer, an assistant or a client needs to log in you are on Team, and Team is double the per-channel rate. A six-channel business goes from $36 to $72 by adding one person who does not post anything.

There is also a number Buffer does not publish: its pricing page says channels above ten cost less per channel, without saying how much less. If you are planning for twenty channels, you cannot work out your own bill from the pricing page.

Buffer's pricing page in August 2026: Free, Essentials at $5 a channel and Team at $10 a channel on yearly billing, with one user account on Free and Essentials and unlimited team members only on Team
Buffer's pricing page, August 2026. One user account on Free and Essentials; unlimited team members only on Team.

The seven alternatives

1. PostPost.ai

Best for: a business or agency that needs the posts made, not just scheduled.

$59 for one brand and 750 AI credits, $149 for three brands and 2 000, $299 for ten brands and 4 000, Agency custom. Annual billing costs ten months. Seats are unlimited on every plan.

What you get is a week rather than a post. Say how many posts you want and roughly what the week is about, and the calendar comes back with every slot already holding a finished draft, caption and visual, adapted per channel instead of one text pasted five times. The mix is weighted toward educational and story-led slots with promotion held to a minority of the week, which is the ratio most business accounts get wrong on their own.

PostPost.ai content planning for a week, with the review panel open on a generated post and an Approve button
A planned week in PostPost.ai. Every slot already holds a finished draft to approve, edit or reject.

That comes out of your website rather than a blank prompt box. You paste your URL, it reads the site, and it builds a brand record: logo, palette, fonts, what you sell, your prices, who you sell to, and how you already write. You can add brand guidelines, an ICP document or a price list, and those get parsed into the same record, and you can correct any of it by hand.

PostPost.ai design style screen showing brand colours, heading and body fonts, the brand logo and three written design rules
The brand record: colours, fonts, logo and design rules read off the site, and editable by hand.

The visuals are the part people do not expect. They are not a prompt thrown at an image model. Your logo is composited onto the finished image pixel-perfect rather than drawn by the model, up to three of your own real photos go in as style references, typography comes from your kit, and the layout is picked from a design template library with a rule against reusing the same look twice in a row. Post twelve looks like it came from the same company as post one, and a carousel reads as one deck instead of ten unrelated slides.

Publishing goes to Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, Telegram and Google Business Profile through official platform APIs. Analytics per channel with CSV export is on the entry plan. Comments and DMs come into one inbox.

“In 10 minutes I did a week of posts, not just Instagram, but Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and Google Business Profile.” — Selection.works, bespoke manufacturer, London

Billing is per brand. Eight channels on one brand cost nothing extra, and neither does the fourth person. For an agency that is the whole argument: adding a client means adding a brand, not buying another seat bundle.

What to watch out for. You will pay more than a pure scheduler, so if all you want is a queue, take Publer or Buffer. There is no multi-step client sign-off: nothing publishes without you approving it and there is no autonomous posting mode, but if an external client must formally approve each post in a chain, Planable is built for that and we are not. No video generation, no social listening, no link-in-bio page. And a website is a hard requirement, because without a site there is nothing to read.

Try it on your own website: paste your URL and read the week it writes.

2. Publer

Best for: the cheapest honest way off Buffer, especially if you already have content to publish.

Professional from $5 a month for one social account, $4 per extra account, $2 per extra member. Business from $10, $7 per extra account, $3 per member. Every tenth account and every tenth member is free. Free plan for three accounts, excluding X.

It looks and works like Buffer and adds the things Buffer never shipped: bulk CSV uploads, RSS automations, post recycling on a loop, first comments scheduled with the post.

Publer's pricing page with the calculator that prices each extra social account and each extra team member
Publer prices each extra social account and each extra team member separately.

Where it stops. Analytics is not on Professional at all, so reporting means Business, where extra accounts cost $7 each and the per-account math starts to feel like Buffer’s again. And it will not build the content library for you.

3. SocialPilot

Best for: small agencies and anyone running more than one brand on a budget.

Essentials $20, Standard $40, Premium $100, Ultimate $200 monthly, 15% off annual. Accounts 5 / 10 / 20 / 40. Team members 1 / 3 / 6 / unlimited. Extra accounts $4, extra users $5 on the middle tiers. Client seats are unlimited from Premium.

Best price per scheduled account in this list. Unified inbox and approvals from Standard, white-label reports and client approval flows from Premium. Client seats do not cost money, which is the opposite of Sprout Social.

Where it stops. Custom reports, CSV export, white-label and competitor reports are all Premium and up, so the $40 tier is thinner than it looks. The AI is caption-level.

SocialPilot's pricing page on yearly billing: Essentials $17, Standard $34, Premium $85 and Ultimate $170, with accounts, users and AI credits per tier
SocialPilot on yearly billing. Accounts, users and AI credits are set per tier, with extra accounts at $4 and extra users at $5.

4. Metricool

Best for: proving what worked, on a small budget.

Free plan with one brand and 20 posts a month. Starter from $20 annual, $25 monthly, for 5 brands, $36 for 10. Advanced from $53 annual, $67 monthly, for 15 brands, $85 for 25, $159 for 50. AI credits are 20 per brand on Starter and 35 on Advanced.

Cheapest route to real cross-channel analytics and competitor tracking, and it bills per brand rather than per channel, which is unusually good value for one business with many accounts. The free tier is a working product rather than a demo.

Where it stops. Team management, client management and post approval all start on Advanced, which more than doubles the entry price. X analytics needs an add-on lower down. It tells you precisely what worked and leaves the writing to you.

Metricool's pricing page: Free, Starter from 16 euros a month, Advanced from 43 euros, and a custom tier, with brand counts per plan
Metricool counts brands rather than channels. Shown in euros; the same page switches to dollars.

5. Planable

Best for: when a client or a boss signs off before anything goes out.

Basic $33 per workspace, Pro $49 per workspace, Enterprise custom, two months free annually. A workspace is roughly one brand or client. Users are unlimited on every tier. Free trial of 50 posts with no time limit.

The best sign-off model here. Pro adds a required-approval state, Enterprise adds multi-level chains, clients comment on the post itself instead of over email, and a reviewer never costs a seat.

Where it stops. Analytics is a $12 per workspace add-on and the social inbox is $7.50, so five clients wanting both is $342.50 a month. Post caps are real: 60 on Basic, 150 on Pro. It is a collaboration layer first and a scheduler second.

Planable's pricing page: Basic $33 and Pro $49 per workspace per month, with a workspace counter and the analytics and social inbox add-ons listed below
Planable charges per workspace, and analytics and the social inbox are add-ons.

6. Later

Best for: Instagram and TikTok accounts where somebody is already making the images.

Starter $25 monthly, $18.75 annual. Growth $50, $37.50. Scale $110, $82.50. Social sets 1 / 2 / 6, profiles 8 / 16 / 48, users 1 / 2 / 4, extra users $5. AI credits 5 / 50 / 100. Inbox and approvals start on Growth.

Still the strongest visual planner: drag media into a grid, see the feed before it exists, schedule from there. Link-in-bio is bundled.

Where it stops. Starter is thin, with no inbox, no approvals, five AI credits and three months of analytics history. Later also removed X publishing and analytics in August 2025, so if X is in your mix it is out.

Later's pricing page on yearly billing: Starter $18.75, Growth $37.50 and Scale $82.50, with the social sets, profile counts and user counts under each
Later counts social sets. The user count under each price is the one that matters for a team.

7. Hootsuite

Best for: a real social team with governance and reporting requirements.

$99 per user per month for Standard with 10 accounts, $199 for Professional with unlimited accounts, $399 for Advanced. Sprout Social prices the same way, $199 to $399 per seat.

What you buy is control: approval chains, message routing, listening, custom reporting, SSO at the top. It generates posts and images with AI now too.

Where it stops. Every person is a full price. Three people on Standard is $297 a month before anyone publishes, and content approval only appears on Advanced at $399 per user. For a small business coming off Buffer this is the wrong shape entirely.

Hootsuite's plans page: Standard, Professional and Advanced priced per user per month, with content approval appearing only on Advanced
Hootsuite charges per user, and content approval starts on Advanced. Shown in euros.

Also worth a look and not in the seven: SocialBee for evergreen content categories, Vista Social for agencies running many profiles, Sendible for white-label reporting, Postiz if you want to self-host.

The bill is not the cost

Software is the small number in this decision. The hours are the big one, and almost nobody prices them.

“We were spending 4–5 hours a week on Instagram posts alone. I had to employ someone: separate images, separate text, then load it into every channel. Now it takes me 15 minutes for the whole week.” — 2VP.Uk, design and build contractor, London

That shape is easy to reconstruct. Take a business posting five times a week across three networks. Every post goes through five steps: pick the topic, write the caption, make or find the visual, adapt it to each network, put it in the queue. By hand that is around 45 minutes a post, plus planning the week and answering comments. Four to five hours a week, sixteen to twenty a month.

A scheduler removes the fifth step. That is one step out of five.

Diagram of the five steps to one post. A scheduler fills only the fifth and leaves 3.5 to 4 hours a week; PostPost.ai fills all five and leaves 0.5 to 1 hour
Five steps to one post, and who removes which.
Tool What it takes off you Hours a week still yours
Buffer Publishing. Caption help on request ~3.5 to 4
Publer Publishing, recycling, bulk upload ~3.5 to 4
SocialPilot Publishing, bulk upload, client reporting ~3.5 to 4
Metricool Publishing, and telling you what worked ~3.5 to 4
Later Publishing, and seeing the grid before it is live ~3.5 to 4
Planable Publishing, and the whole approval round ~3 to 3.5
Hootsuite Publishing, governance, reporting ~3 to 3.5
PostPost.ai The topic, the caption, the visual, the per-channel version, publishing ~0.5 to 1

Those hours are an estimate from the step count, not a measured average. Run the count on your own last five posts and you will get a figure you trust more than ours.

Then price them. Freelance social media work sits in a $14 to $150 an hour range with a median near $20 (Upwork marketplace data), an in-house manager in the US costs $7,500 to $11,400 a month once employer benefit costs are counted (Robert Half 2026 salary guide with the BLS employer-cost load factor), and agency retainers start around $500 a month. Sixteen hours at the $20 median is roughly $320 of work a month.

Against that, the difference between a $24 scheduler and a $59 tool that produces the content is $35.

Three bills, seven tools

Pricing models here count different things: channels, social accounts, brands, workspaces, or people. Headline prices are not comparable, so here are three real shapes with the same job in each, at monthly billing.

One business, one person, four channels

Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok. Owner posts alone.

Tool Monthly What you get for it
Publer Professional $17 4 accounts. No analytics on this tier
SocialPilot Essentials $20 5 accounts, 1 user, no inbox
Buffer Essentials $24 4 channels, 1 user
Metricool Starter $25 5 brands, 20 AI credits per brand
Later Starter $25 8 profiles, 1 user, no inbox, 5 AI credits
Planable Basic + add-ons $52.50 4 pages, 60 posts. Analytics $12 and inbox $7.50 are separate
PostPost.ai Business $59 1 brand, every channel, inbox and analytics included, 750 AI credits, and the content produced
Hootsuite Standard $99 1 user, 10 accounts

If the posts are already written and the images already made, Publer at $17 does one job cheaply and does it well. If they are not, the gap to $59 is $35 a month against sixteen-odd hours. Per hour removed, that is the cheapest row in the table.

One business, three people, six channels

Add X and YouTube. Owner plus two people, one of whom only reviews.

Tool Monthly Note
SocialPilot Standard $40 10 accounts, 3 members, inbox, approvals
Publer Business $51 $10 + 5 extra accounts at $7, plus 2 members at $3
Later Growth $55 2 users included, third at $5
PostPost.ai Business $59 Seats unlimited on every plan, so the third person is free
Metricool Advanced $67 Team management is not on Starter, it starts here
Planable Pro + add-ons $68.50 Unlimited users, but analytics and inbox are still add-ons
Buffer Team $72 The only Buffer tier that admits a second person
Hootsuite Standard $297 $99 per user. Approvals need Advanced at $399 per user

This is where Buffer’s model turns over. The same six channels cost $36 with one person and $72 with two, and the second person gets no capability beyond being allowed in. At this shape we are cheaper than Buffer and also writing the posts.

Five brands or clients, four channels each, four people

Tool Monthly What it counts
Metricool Advanced $67 Brands, 15 included
SocialPilot Premium $100 20 accounts, 6 members, unlimited client seats, white-label
Later Scale $110 6 social sets, 4 users
Buffer Team $120 and up 20 channels: ten at $12, then a rate Buffer does not publish
Publer Business ~$138 20 accounts, every tenth free, plus 3 members
PostPost.ai Studio $299 Brands, 10 included, unlimited seats, 4 000 AI credits
Planable Pro + add-ons $342.50 5 workspaces at $49, each needing its own $19.50 of add-ons
Hootsuite Professional $796 $199 per user

SocialPilot at $100 will schedule five clients and it is the cheapest way to do that. Studio at $299 gives each of the five a weekly plan, captions and branded visuals of its own, which is the work an agency currently hands to a freelancer or a junior. Five brands of content at the $20 an hour median passes $299 long before anyone opens a calendar.

One real gap on our side: Pro covers three brands and Studio covers ten, so five brands pays for ten.

What is not in the headline price

Analytics

Included on Buffer Essentials and above, on SocialPilot, on Metricool at every tier, and on PostPost.ai from the entry plan with CSV export.

Restricted or sold separately elsewhere. Planable charges $12 per workspace per month, so five clients is $60 on top. Publer has no analytics on Professional. Later’s Starter keeps three months of history, which is not long enough to see whether a change worked.

Comments and DMs

The feature most likely to sit one tier above where you thought. Buffer’s Community inbox is included. SocialPilot’s unified inbox starts on Standard, not Essentials. Later’s inbox starts on Growth. Planable sells the inbox as a $7.50 per-workspace add-on on every tier.

Ours is included on every plan, and it is worth being exact about coverage rather than saying all your messages: comments come in from Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Threads, and direct messages from Facebook and Instagram.

Comments and direct messages from connected channels in one list.

People

Four models, and this one moves your bill more than any feature.

  • Per seat. Hootsuite at $99 to $399 per user per month, Sprout Social the same. Every reviewer and every client who wants to look is another full price.
  • Per channel, seats bundled. Buffer. One user on Free and Essentials with no option to pay for a second, unlimited users on Team at double the channel rate.
  • Seats as a cheap add-on. Publer at $2 to $3, Later at $5, SocialPilot at $5 on the middle tiers.
  • Seats not counted at all. Planable per workspace, PostPost.ai per brand. Owner, Editor and Viewer roles, and adding people never changes the invoice.

What the AI in each of these actually makes

Every tool here says AI. They mean different things, and that difference is the hours column.

Tool Caption text Images Carousels A plan for the week
Buffer Yes, all tiers No No No
Publer Unlimited prompts on Business Via VistaCreate No No
SocialPilot 500 to 5 000 credits by tier Limited No No
Metricool 20 to 35 credits per brand No No No
Later 5 to 100 credits by tier No No No
Planable Yes No No No
Hootsuite Yes Yes No No
PostPost.ai Yes Yes, built from your brand Yes Yes, weekly

Credit counts are not comparable across vendors, because a credit buys different things. The column headings are. Six of the eight rows generate caption text and leave the picture, the format and the calendar to you, which is four of the five steps.

“I was paying an assistant to run our Instagram and Facebook, and still had to check the work. Now I give the idea and the focus, the system makes it, and I press approve.” — AtoZ Design and Glass, design and glazing

Picking one

  • You have the content and only need it published. Buffer or Publer, starting on their free plans.
  • You have almost no content and no designer. PostPost.ai. That is the case it was built for.
  • You need to prove what works on a small budget. Metricool.
  • A client signs off on everything. Planable, or PostPost.ai if the client also needs the content made.
  • Instagram and TikTok are the whole business. Later.
  • You run several brands and each needs its own consistent look. PostPost.ai. If they only need scheduling, SocialPilot.
  • You have a social team and internal reporting to satisfy. Hootsuite or Sprout Social.

None of these tools decides what your business stands for this quarter, and be suspicious of any that claims to. Strategy stays yours. What you can hand over is turning that decision into fifteen posts that look and sound like you, and that is the part that eats the week.

FAQ

What is the best Buffer alternative? There is no single answer, because Buffer users leave for two different reasons. If you left over price, Publer does the same job from $5 a month per account. If you left because the calendar was still empty, a scheduler will not fix that and you want a tool that produces the posts, which in this list is PostPost.ai from $59 a month.

What is the cheapest Buffer alternative? Publer’s free plan covers three social accounts, matching Buffer’s free tier. Paid, Publer Professional starts at $5 a month for one account plus $4 per extra account. Metricool’s free tier is one brand and 20 posts a month.

Does Buffer still have a free plan? Yes: three channels, one user, ten scheduled posts per channel at a time.

Which Buffer alternative is best for a team? It depends on how the tool counts people. Hootsuite and Sprout Social charge per seat, so a team is where they get expensive fastest. Planable and PostPost.ai do not count seats at all. SocialPilot includes three members on the $40 tier. Buffer requires the Team tier for a second person, which doubles the per-channel rate.

Is a $59 tool worth it over a $24 one? It depends on whether the $24 tool leaves you with four hours of work a week. At the $20 an hour freelance median, sixteen hours a month is about $320 of work. The $35 difference in software is the wrong number to optimise if the more expensive tool removes most of those hours.

Can I move my Buffer queue across? Plan on rebuilding it. Buffer added bulk CSV scheduling in 2025, so exporting your plan and re-uploading it through a CSV import is the usual route. We have not seen a one-click Buffer queue import in any of these tools.

Will an AI tool post on my accounts without me seeing it first? It should not, and you should check before connecting anything. In PostPost.ai every post is a draft until you schedule it, and there is no autonomous posting mode. Confirm the same about any tool you try, and confirm the connection uses official platform APIs rather than your password.

Try it on your own website

Business is $59 a month for one brand, and there is a 7-day trial. Paste your website address into PostPost.ai, look at the brand record it builds and the first week it writes, and cancel inside the week if the content is not usable. That is a faster test than reading any comparison table, including this one.
