Upload at 1920 × 1080, 16:9, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio at 48 kHz, at the frame rate you shot at. That is a normal YouTube video, and for most people it is the whole answer.
The rest of this page is the numbers around it: the full resolution ladder, what YouTube does with a clip that is not 16:9, how long a video can be, what turns an upload into a Short whether you meant it or not, and the thumbnail and banner sizes that most guides are still quoting from several years ago.
YouTube video size at a glance
| What | The number |
|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 for standard video, square or vertical for Shorts |
| Resolution to upload | your native resolution; 1920 × 1080 is the usual HD delivery size |
| Resolution ladder | 426 × 240 through 7680 × 4320 |
| Frame rate | the rate you recorded at — commonly 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, 60 |
| Container | MP4, moov atom at the front |
| Codecs | H.264 video, AAC-LC audio (Opus and Eclipsa Audio also recommended) |
| Audio | 48 kHz, 384 kbps for stereo |
| Video bitrate, 1080p SDR | 8 Mbps at 24–30 fps, 12 Mbps at 48–60 |
| Length, verified account | up to 12 hours |
| Length, unverified account | 15 minutes |
| File size | up to 256 GB |
| Short | square or vertical, up to 3 minutes |
| Title | 100 characters |
| Description | 5,000 characters |
| Video thumbnail | 3840 × 2160, 16:9, JPG or PNG |
| Channel banner | 2560 × 1440, safe area 1235 × 338 |
Two rows will contradict something you have read elsewhere. Shorts run to three minutes, not sixty seconds, and have since October 2024. Thumbnails are now specified at 3840 × 2160 rather than 1280 × 720, with a 50 MB ceiling on desktop instead of 2 MB. Both changed under guides that were written once and never revisited, which is why so much of what is published about YouTube sizes disagrees with YouTube’s own help pages.
YouTube video dimensions and aspect ratio
1920 × 1080 is the shape that fills the player
The standard aspect ratio on YouTube is 16:9 — sixteen units across for every nine down, the shape of every television and laptop screen made this century. At Full HD that is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 tall.
YouTube’s own advice is to upload at the resolution you actually shot, rather than converting everything to 1080p on the way out. It builds the lower rungs itself, and it cannot invent detail you threw away before uploading.
| Quality | 16:9 resolution |
|---|---|
| 4320p (8K) | 7680 × 4320 |
| 2160p (4K) | 3840 × 2160 |
| 1440p (2K) | 2560 × 1440 |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920 × 1080 |
| 720p (HD) | 1280 × 720 |
| 480p (SD) | 854 × 480 |
| 360p (SD) | 640 × 360 |
| 240p (SD) | 426 × 240 |
Are YouTube videos 1920 × 1080?
Usually, and the order of those two numbers is the thing to watch. 1920 × 1080 is landscape. 1080 × 1920 is the same pixel count rotated, which is the vertical shape used for Shorts. Export “1080p” out of a desktop editor without changing the canvas and you get the landscape one, which is correct for a standard video and will stop a clip you intended as a Short from being treated as one.
Never bake in your own black bars
This is the one instruction on YouTube’s specification page that people read past, and it matters more than the resolution you pick:
For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video. Padding interferes with YouTube’s ability to change the player dynamically to your video size and the viewer’s device.
Upload a vertical clip inside a 16:9 frame with black down both sides and you have permanently welded those bars to the picture. The player then treats the whole 16:9 frame as the video, and on a phone held upright your subject ends up a small window in the middle of the screen. Upload the same clip at its native 1080 × 1920 and the player fits itself to the footage.
When YouTube does pad a video — a vertical clip watched on a desktop browser, for instance — it draws the padding itself, white by default and dark grey under the dark theme. It is not something you have to supply.
Square, 4:3 and ultrawide
All of them upload and all of them play. The player changes to match. A 4:3 clip from an old archive, a 1:1 square cut for cross-posting, a 2.39:1 cinema crop — none is refused, and the only real cost is how much of a 16:9 screen the footage covers.
The one shape with a consequence attached is vertical, because vertical plus a short runtime is how YouTube decides something is a Short. That is the next section.
Resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Frame rate first, because it is the setting people change for no reason: upload at the rate the content was recorded at. Common rates are 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps, and others are accepted. Converting 30 to 60 adds nothing but file size, and converting 60 down to 30 throws away the smoothness you shot for. Interlaced footage should be deinterlaced first — 1080i60 becomes 1080p30 before it goes anywhere near the upload button.
YouTube publishes recommended bitrates per resolution. These are targets for your export, not limits YouTube enforces:
| Resolution | SDR, 24–30 fps | SDR, 48–60 fps | HDR, 24–30 fps | HDR, 48–60 fps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps | 44–56 Mbps | 66–85 Mbps |
| 1440p (2K) | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 20 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
For audio, 48 kHz sample rate, AAC-LC codec, and 384 kbps for stereo (128 kbps mono, 512 kbps for 5.1). Opus and Eclipsa Audio are also on YouTube’s recommended list now, though AAC in an MP4 is what every editor exports by default and what every scheduling tool accepts.
The encoder settings underneath matter less than people think, but if your editor exposes them: H.264 High Profile, progressive scan, CABAC entropy coding, 4:2:0 chroma, two consecutive B-frames, a closed GOP half the length of your frame rate, and the moov atom written at the front of the file so playback can start before the download finishes.
Should you upload in 4K?
Upload 4K if you shot 4K. YouTube encodes a 2160p master into better-looking 1080p than a 1080p master produces, because the downscale happens before compression rather than after it. The costs are upload time and a file several times larger, which is a real consideration when a clip has to travel through a phone on a hotel connection.
What does not help is upscaling. A 1080p timeline exported at 3840 × 2160 is a 1080p video in a larger container, with a bigger file and no extra detail.
YouTube video length and file size
| Account | Maximum length | Maximum file size |
|---|---|---|
| Unverified | 15 minutes | 256 GB |
| Phone-verified | 12 hours | 256 GB |
Both ceilings apply at once, so the practical limit is 12 hours or 256 GB, whichever you hit first. Verification is a phone number in YouTube Studio and takes a minute; until it is done, a 16-minute video will be refused no matter how small the file is.
For a business channel none of this binds. A 10-minute 1080p video at 8 Mbps is roughly 600 MB, which is nowhere near the ceiling. The limit that actually bites is whatever tool sits between your export and YouTube, which is further down this page.
YouTube Shorts size and length
A Short is 1080 × 1920, vertical, and up to three minutes long.
Three minutes has been the limit since 15 October 2024. The 60-second figure is the single most reprinted stale number in this whole subject.
What makes something a Short is not a button or a hashtag. YouTube classifies it from the file:
Videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 with a square or vertical aspect ratio and up to three minutes in length are categorized as Shorts.
Official Artist Channels came under the same rule on 8 December 2025.
Three consequences follow, and the first one surprises people.
A vertical clip you meant as a normal video becomes a Short anyway. If it is square or taller and under three minutes, it goes to the Shorts feed. There is no setting to opt out.
To keep a short video out of the Shorts feed, change the shape. Upload it wider than square — 16:9 is the obvious choice — and it stays a long-form video regardless of runtime.
Over three minutes, vertical is no longer automatic. A four-minute vertical upload is a regular video. YouTube’s apps may offer to trim it into a Short, which is an edit you choose rather than something applied to the file.
#Shorts in the title or description does nothing to the classification. It was a hint YouTube needed in 2020 and has not needed for years.
How long should a Short be?
Fifteen to forty-five seconds for most business content. The three-minute ceiling is room, not a target, and watch-through is what the Shorts feed rewards. Every vertical feed draws this line in its own place, and the ceilings move about: Instagram allows 90 seconds for a Reel sent through its API, against YouTube’s three minutes. Anything with a beginning, a point and an end inside 30 seconds is competing well; a 2-minute vertical video is competing against everything else in a feed built for thumb-speed.
File formats YouTube accepts
MP4 is the recommendation, and MP4 wrapping H.264 is what phones export, what editors default to and what every scheduler takes. The accepted list is much longer:
.MOV, .MPEG-1, .MPEG-2, .MPEG4, .MP4, .MPG, .AVI, .WMV, .MPEGPS, .FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm and HEVC (H.265).
Two practical notes on that list. A ProRes or DNxHR master uploads fine and is enormous, which is worth knowing before you start a 40 GB upload rather than exporting an H.264 version first. And an audio file on its own — MP3, WAV, PCM — cannot be uploaded to create a video. It has to be inside a video file, even if the picture is a single still frame.
The other YouTube sizes people ask for
Video thumbnail
3840 × 2160, 16:9, JPG or PNG, minimum width 640 pixels. The file size ceiling is 2 MB uploaded from mobile and 50 MB from desktop — YouTube raised the desktop limit to support 4K thumbnails, and almost no guide has caught up. If you have been compressing thumbnails to squeeze under 2 MB on a laptop, you have not needed to for a while.
Custom thumbnails require a verified account.
Shorts thumbnail
2160 × 3840, 9:16, minimum height 640 pixels. A vertical thumbnail for a vertical video, which is a recent addition — uploading a custom image for a Short began rolling out to Partner Program creators in July 2026. Outside that, a Short’s thumbnail is a frame chosen from the video.
Channel banner
2560 × 1440 recommended, 2048 × 1152 minimum, 16:9, up to 6 MB.
The number that matters is the safe area: 1235 × 338 pixels in the centre. That rectangle is what shows on a phone. Everything outside it is cropped on some device or other, so a logo parked in a corner of a 2560-pixel-wide banner is invisible to most of the people who visit your channel. YouTube also asks you not to add borders, frames or drop shadows to the file, since the banner is already framed by the page.
The widely circulated 1546 × 423 safe area is the equivalent measured on the larger canvas. 1235 × 338 on 2048 × 1152 is how the current help page states it.
Profile picture
Renders at 98 × 98 pixels, up to 15 MB, as JPG, PNG, BMP or a non-animated GIF. Upload something considerably larger than 98 pixels so it survives every place YouTube scales it, and keep the subject centred — it is cropped to a circle everywhere.
Title, description and tags
The title takes 100 characters and the description takes 5,000, and going over either is a refusal at upload rather than a silent trim.
Only two or three lines of the description show before “Show more”, and a search result shows less than that. Whatever the video is about, and any link you actually want clicked, belongs in those first lines. You can count a description against the limit with our YouTube description character counter before you write it into Studio.
Timestamps become chapters when the first one starts at 0:00, there are at least three of them, and each is at least ten seconds apart. That is a formatting rule rather than a length one, and it is the most common reason a description gets rewritten after the fact.
Scheduling YouTube videos
A scheduling tool sits between your export and YouTube and adds its own limits on top of the platform’s: which formats it takes, how large a file it will carry, and which metadata fields it can set. Those three are worth checking before you plan a quarter of video around one.
The same clip usually goes to more than one network, and the shapes do not agree: what YouTube calls a standard video is landscape, while TikTok has no landscape surface at all. Ours takes MP4 and MOV up to 64 MB, one clip per post, and counts the description against YouTube’s real 5,000 characters. YouTube’s own upload fields are exposed rather than hidden: category, privacy, tags, the made-for-kids declaration and the altered-or-synthetic-media disclosure, all set before the video goes out.
One thing we are honest about, because it catches people with every scheduler: we do not read your clip’s duration or its pixel dimensions. Nothing in our image can open a video file and measure it, so a 4-minute vertical clip scheduled as a Short will publish as a regular vertical video, and we will not have warned you. The shape and the runtime are yours to get right in the export. What you can check without an account is the description length with the character counter, and the caption and file against every network at once with the post checker.
FAQ
What size should a YouTube video be? 1920 × 1080 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio, uploaded as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio at 48 kHz. Upload higher than 1080p if you shot higher.
Are YouTube videos 1920 × 1080 or 1080 × 1920? 1920 × 1080 for a standard video. 1080 × 1920 is the vertical shape used by Shorts.
What aspect ratio does YouTube use? 16:9 for standard video. Square and vertical ratios play fine and are what Shorts are made from.
How long can a YouTube video be? 15 minutes on an unverified account, and up to 12 hours once you verify by phone. The file also has to be under 256 GB.
How long can a YouTube Short be? Three minutes, since 15 October 2024. Guides still saying 60 seconds are out of date.
How do I stop my video being posted as a Short? Make it wider than square. A 16:9 upload stays a long-form video however short it is.
What is the maximum file size for a YouTube video? 256 GB, or 12 hours of runtime, whichever you reach first.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be? 3840 × 2160 at 16:9, JPG or PNG, minimum width 640 pixels, up to 2 MB from mobile or 50 MB from desktop.
What is the YouTube description limit? 5,000 characters, with a separate 100-character limit on the title.
Before you upload
Export at the resolution and frame rate you shot, 16:9 for a standard video and 1080 × 1920 for a Short, MP4 with H.264 and AAC at 48 kHz, around 8 Mbps for 1080p. Do not paint black bars into the frame. Keep a Short under three minutes if you want it treated as one, and wider than square if you do not. Put the point of the description in the first two lines, and keep your banner’s text inside 1235 × 338.
If you would rather not hold any of this in your head, PostPost.ai reads your brand from your own website and writes a month of on-brand posts, each already shaped for the network it goes to.
